About the role
You will report to the Operational Telecoms Senior Project Engineer. The role sits within Network Operations and is based at our Nelson Street, London office. You will be a permanent employee.
Principal accountabilities
Typical accountabilities for the Technician include:
- Maintain a high standard of safety management throughout your responsibilities. Make sure safety procedures are followed correctly.
- Carry out wiring and other SCADA-related activities on site, usually on your own. This includes implementing modifications or repairs of SCADA and comms equipment.
- Deliver upgrade and improvement work on operational SCADA equipment within Grid, Primary, and Secondary substations. This includes the configuration, testing, and integration of SMART Grid solutions and SCADA interfaces.
- Build Telecontrol Equipment Cubicles (TEC) and other SCADA equipment within the Ops Telecoms workshops at Nelson Street, East Ham.
Installation and maintenance
You will install and maintain:
- Copper and fibre optic communication circuits.
- Radio communication equipment and antennas.
- VSAT and BGAN satellite communication equipment.
- Telecontrol equipment and associated wiring to substation plant and equipment.
- Inter-tripping and protection comms equipment.
Wider responsibilities
- Help to deliver the annual Ops Telecoms work programme, following the network management plan.
- Operate Spectrum Analysers, use Oscar signal generation equipment, and handle portable tools and equipment as part of the role. You will be expected to maintain, calibrate, and test these items periodically. The value of all the equipment held by the post-holder exceeds £40,000.
- Carry the most common equipment to enable quick and reliable system restoration. Maintain stock levels through accurate replenishment and repair.
- Support our Command Vehicle, located at Nelson Street. Make sure it is deployed safely and train other staff on its operation during deployment, usually on the site of a major network incident.
Qualifications and skills
Essential
- In-depth knowledge of Networks SCADA and its application in providing real-time control systems connected to live switchgear, transformers, and other substation equipment and apparatus.
- Awareness of inter-tripping systems and basic protection systems.
- Technically and electrically competent — City and Guilds 2322 in Electronic and Electrical theory.
- Able to carry out build or repair tasks with an understanding of schematic and wiring diagrams.
- Proficient in the use of laptop computers running numerous software tools for the configuration and testing of complex comms and SCADA equipment.
- Experience of the PowerOn network management system with Telecontrol Technician access privileges.
- Competent use of hand tools, power tools, and test equipment. Able to install complex wiring within substation equipment.
- Able to risk-assess and put others to work safely. This includes managing other staff and contractors working in substations.
- Good understanding and awareness of relevant policies on network standards, Health & Safety, and electricity regulations. You should know where to reference a policy.
- Experience working with CDM regulations and ISO 9001 quality processes.
- Familiar with copper and fibre optic jointing and basic manual handling techniques.
- Awareness of cyber-security precautions and why these are important for SCADA services.
- Knowledge of IP and other SCADA protocols, including the use of diagnostic tools such as Wireshark.
- Experience with fault diagnostics and logical fault-finding techniques. You should be able to modify your approach as you assimilate more information during work on a complex fault.
- Full UK driving licence.

- VSAT alignment accreditation.
- GE T5000 RTU accreditation.
- NRSWA accreditation.
- Type A, B, and C confined space access.
Substation access (132kV)
Substation access up to and including 132kV requires you to hold a competency certificate under UK Power Networks safety rules. This certificate permits the holder to enter into and work within substations unattended. It also covers operating and modifying SCADA equipment.
Pre-employment checks
If you are successful, you will need to undertake a medical examination. A DBS reference check is also required.
