About the role

You will report to the Field Staff Supervisor and work within Network Operations, based at our Cambridge office. You will be a permanent employee in the UK Power Networks team.

Job purpose

You will manage the delivery of network enhancement projects. You will also restore electrical supplies on the UK Power Networks distribution system. The work includes carrying out repairs on the overhead lines.

Duties

You will carry out all work connected to the construction, maintenance, and reporting of:

  • Overhead lines and any associated plant and equipment. This includes connections, earthing, cable laying, and the necessary excavation, backfill, and reinstatement.
  • Overhead line service lines, pilots, and catenaries.
  • Service termination equipment and the connections to it.

You will also:

  • Patrol overhead lines and report defects, plus any work being performed near the line route.
  • Carry out work on live 240/415v apparatus, conductors, or equipment, following the appropriate safety rules.
  • Carry out live line work on overhead lines up to and including 33kV.
  • Install, connect, disconnect, remove, or re-site whole current metering.
  • Remove and replace links and fuses on the 240/415v network.
  • Use meters and instruments, and record readings.
  • Assist in resistance, thermal, and height measurements on overhead lines.
  • Carry out rigging, and erect and inspect pre-formed scaffolds and pole and clip scaffolds.
  • Carry out tree felling and tree trimming.
  • Drive vehicles, clean them, and carry out roadworthiness checks.
  • Operate communications and data transmission equipment.
  • Operate mechanical aids and use portable equipment.
  • Switch, isolate, and earth when authorised to do so.
  • Undertake standby duties on a contractual basis.

Nature and scope

You will work with the team to achieve the targets set out in the Performance Dashboard. You will work under your own initiative. You will also need to perform risk assessments to create a safe working environment.

Required qualifications

  • LV and HV Authorised.
  • EPN network competency certificate.
  • City and Guilds 232 certificate.
  • The ability to work on your own initiative.
  • The ability to complete self-risk assessments.
  • The ability to work as part of a team.
  • A willingness to train and learn new skills, so you can perform the full range of duties.
  • Experience in overhead line construction and maintenance.

Pre-employment checks

If you are successful, you will need to undertake a medical examination. A DBS reference check is also required.

You will earn £41,031 to £43,031 a year, plus a 3% bonus. We also provide:
