Our Paediatric Occupational Therapy team is based at The Riverside Children’s Centre in North Shields. We support children aged 0 to 18 who have a range of physical difficulties — including cerebral palsy and developmental coordination disorder — and who find everyday activities harder than they should be. About the role

As a Technical Instructor, you will work alongside qualified Occupational Therapists and our wider Allied Health Professional colleagues to deliver treatment goals tailored to each individual child, across a number of different settings.

Your day-to-day work will include helping children use the specialist equipment provided by their therapists, supporting their play experiences, and encouraging them to take part in everyday activities. You will also help carry out fine motor and daily living interventions that are planned with the therapy team.

We are a very supportive team and work closely with all the other therapists and professionals involved in each child’s care, so that families receive a consistent, high-quality service.

What you will be doing

  • Support qualified Occupational Therapists to deliver joint, targeted treatment goals set individually for every child.
  • Help children use the specialist equipment provided by their therapists.
  • Encourage and support children’s play experiences and their participation in everyday activities.
  • Carry out fine motor and daily living interventions planned with the therapy team.
  • Work across a number of environments, supporting children where they learn and live.
  • Work closely with Allied Health Professional colleagues and others involved in each child’s care.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated person who has experience of, and a genuine passion for, working with children.

Qualifications – essential

  • Education to GCSE level or equivalent.
  • An NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care or above (or equivalent), or a willingness to complete this within 12 months of starting — or equivalent experience and qualifications.

Qualifications – desirable

  • Food handling.
  • Group skills.

Experience – essential

  • Experience in a health or social care setting.
  • A basic understanding of the philosophy of Occupational Therapy and its core skills.

Experience – desirable

  • Previous experience of working in an Occupational Therapy setting.
  • Experience of carrying out non-complex OT assessments and interventions.

Other requirements

A valid driving licence is an essential requirement of this role. You will need to be a car owner who can use the car for work purposes, or hold a Trust personal lease vehicle that can be used for the role. The Trust will, however, consider making reasonable adjustments to the role where necessary to enable a disabled person to carry it out.

Pay, contract, and hours

This is a permanent, part-time post on Agenda for Change Band 3, paying £25,760 to £27,476 a year pro rata. Flexible working is available, and we are happy to talk through what that could look like for you.
