Senior Medical Technologist (Respiratory Equipment) London. UK
Full Time NewBookmark Details
Looking for a hands-on engineering role where your work makes a real difference to people’s lives? The Lane Fox Respiratory Unit at Guy’s and St Thomas’ is hiring a Senior Medical Technologist to help keep life-supporting respiratory and ventilation equipment running safely — on our hospital wards, at our satellite sites, and in patients’ own homes.
This is a chance to build a specialist career in respiratory technology at one of the UK’s leading centres for chronic respiratory failure and long-term ventilation. If you enjoy fault-finding, repair work, and knowing exactly why your job matters, read on.
- Working pattern: 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, plus a 24/7 on-call rota
- Reference number: 196-LIS10489E
About the role
As a Senior Medical Technologist, you will maintain, repair, and support the respiratory and ventilation equipment used across our service. The work is genuinely hands-on — you will diagnose and fix faults at system, component, and circuit level, including electronic fault-finding, repair, modification, and soldering.
Every piece of equipment you sign off has to be safe, reliable, and fully compliant with Trust, manufacturer, and medical device regulations. Patients and clinical teams depend on that equipment around the clock, so accuracy and care are at the heart of the job.
You will also spend time away from the bench. The role includes community visits and multi-site work, so a full UK driving licence is essential. You will install and maintain equipment in patients’ homes and explain how to use it clearly and patiently — to families and carers as well as to nurses, doctors, and physiotherapists.
New to the field? Trainee applicants are welcome through the Annex 21 training pathway and will progress to Band 6 once they have completed their training.
What you will be doing
- Service, fault-find, and repair respiratory and ventilation equipment at system and component/circuit level, including electronic diagnostics and soldering.
- Make sure equipment is safe, tested, and compliant with Trust, manufacturer, and medical device regulations before it returns to use.
- Withdraw non-compliant equipment from service and report it through the correct channels.
- Maintain and calibrate test equipment, and keep accurate, up-to-date records.
- Take part in the on-call rota so hospital and community patients have technical support 24 hours a day.
- Install and maintain equipment across our sites and in patients’ homes, using Trust vehicles.
- Provide clear technical advice and training to healthcare professionals, patients, families, and carers.
- Support equipment trials, service improvement projects, and the training of junior staff and Annex 21 trainees.
- Make sure equipment is handled and decontaminated safely, in line with infection control policies.

- A full UK driving licence.
- The ability to work well on your own and as part of a small, friendly team.
