About the Role

Barnt Green Surgery is on the lookout for a warm, organised, and dependable Medical Receptionist to join its small but tight-knit team. If you enjoy meeting people, take pride in keeping things running smoothly behind the scenes, and want a part-time job that genuinely makes a difference in your local community, this one is worth a closer look.

The surgery sits in the leafy village of Barnt Green, just a short drive or train ride from Birmingham city centre. It is the kind of place where patients are recognised by name, colleagues actually know each other, and the working day has a steady rhythm rather than a constant rush.

Working Hours and Shift Pattern

This is a part-time role covering 16 hours per week across three fixed shifts:

  • Monday: 1:00pm to 7:00pm (6 hours)
  • Tuesday: 2:00pm to 7:00pm (5 hours)
  • Friday: 8:00am to 1:00pm (5 hours)

You will also be asked to step in and cover for colleagues during holidays or sickness, so a bit of flexibility goes a long way here.

What You Will Be Doing

As the first friendly face patients see when they walk through the door, your day will involve a mix of front-desk duties and behind-the-scenes admin. Day to day, you can expect to:

  • Greet patients and visitors in a polite, calm, and professional manner
  • Help patients book appointments and direct them to the right service or clinician
  • Answer the phone and respond to queries with patience and clarity
  • Support GPs, nurses, pharmacists, and the wider practice team with everyday admin tasks
  • Keep patient records and paperwork accurate, tidy, and up to date
  • Pitch in wherever needed to keep the practice running smoothly

The work is varied, the pace is steady, and no two days look exactly the same.

About Barnt Green Surgery

Barnt Green Surgery is a small to medium-sized GP practice with a friendly, long-serving team and a strong reputation among patients. The clinical team includes salaried GPs, Physician Associates, a Nurse Prescriber, Practice Nurses, a Pharmacy team, and Healthcare Assistants, all backed by a supportive management and administrative crew.

The practice is a high-achieving QOF (Quality and Outcomes Framework) surgery and takes real pride in the standard of care it delivers. Patients tend to stay loyal here, and staff do too.

Who We Are Looking For

You do not need years of NHS experience to apply, but you do need to be a people person with a calm head and a good work ethic. The traits that matter most are honesty, kindness, and the willingness to learn.

Essential Requirements

  • A good standard of general education, including GCSE Maths and English at grade C (or grade 4) and above
  • Confident verbal and written communication
  • A polite, clear, and reassuring telephone manner
  • Strong organisational skills and a good eye for detail
  • Comfort with basic numeracy and everyday computer tasks
  • A calm, professional, and friendly approach with patients and colleagues
  • Willingness to follow instructions accurately and use your own initiative
  • Common sense and a problem-solving mindset
  • Comfortable with face-to-face contact with the public
  • Willingness to cover extra shifts during holidays or staff sickness
  • Open to ongoing learning and any training the role may require

Nice to Have (But Not Essential)

  • AMPSAR Receptionist Certificate
  • Certificate in Customer Care
  • A computer literacy qualification
  • Some background in primary care or general practice
  • Familiarity with medical terminology
  • Previous NHS or GP surgery experience
  • Working knowledge of EMIS or another clinical computer system

If you tick most of the essentials and a few of the desirable boxes, you are encouraged to apply.

Background Check

This role falls under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975. That simply means the successful candidate will need to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check before starting, which is standard practice for any job involving patient contact.

How to Apply

If this sounds like the right fit, send your application before the closing date of 31 May 2026. Make sure your CV is up to date and add a short cover note explaining why you are interested in joining Barnt Green Surgery. Applications received after the deadline may not be considered.
