Job Title: Finance Manager

Location: Lagos

Job Objective

The Finance Manager will serve as the organization’s financial steward and business intelligence lead, ensuring financial accuracy, strong cash flow management, and sustained profitability. The role oversees margins, operating expenses, and working capital while delivering timely insights that support data-driven decision-making. This position connects finance and operations to ensure the business remains profitable, compliant, and financially disciplined.

Roles and Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Compliance (Stewardship)

  • Take full ownership of end-to-end financial reporting, including monthly management accounts, quarterly reviews, annual statutory financial statements, and reporting to the brand principal

  • Ensure full compliance with Nigerian GAAP/IFRS, tax regulations (CIT, VAT, WHT, PAYE), CAC requirements, and brand principal financial controls and audit standards

  • Manage external audits to achieve clean audit opinions and maintain audit-ready records throughout the year

Profitability & Performance Management (Commercial Rigor)

  • Monitor gross margins by category, SKU, and store, identifying risks from pricing, discounting, and shrinkage, and collaborating with Buying and Merchandising to safeguard profitability

  • Control operating expenses by ensuring adherence to budget, challenging non-essential expenditure, and optimizing cost structures as operations scale

  • Deliver store-level P&L analysis, identifying high- and low-performing locations and providing actionable recommendations to Retail Operations

  • Partner with Marketing on fund reconciliation and return-on-investment analysis to improve campaign effectiveness

Cash Flow & Working Capital Management (Liquidity)

  • Forecast cash flow requirements, factoring in inventory cycles, capital expenditure, store openings, and seasonal fluctuations to proactively identify funding needs

  • Optimize working capital by monitoring inventory, receivables, and payables, while collaborating with Buying and Merchandising to improve inventory turnover and supplier terms

  • Oversee banking and treasury operations, ensuring liquidity, negotiating credit facilities, and mitigating foreign exchange exposure through appropriate hedging strategies

Budgeting & Financial Planning (Forward-Looking Stewardship)

  • Lead the annual budgeting process by coordinating inputs across departments, challenging assumptions, and delivering consolidated budgets and rolling forecasts

  • Develop financial models to support new store business cases, pricing and promotional strategies, and investment scenario analysis

  • Conduct monthly variance analysis against budget and forecasts, providing clear, decision-oriented insights to leadership

Internal Controls & Risk Management (Governance)

  • Design, implement, and enforce financial controls covering cash handling, procurement, payments, expenses, and segregation of duties

  • Identify and mitigate financial risks, including fraud, revenue leakage, pricing or discount errors, and regulatory compliance breaches

  • Conduct periodic financial audits of stores, systems, and processes to ensure governance and accountability

Business Intelligence & Data Analytics

  • Develop financial dashboards and key performance indicators tracking revenue, margins, operating expenses, working capital, and cash flow

  • Translate financial data into actionable insights that inform strategic and operational decisions

  • Partner with operational teams to convert financial analysis into performance improvement initiatives

Cross-Functional Partnership & Commercial Support (Business Enabler)

  • Retail Operations: Provide store-level P&L reporting, performance metrics, and financial guidance for operational decisions, including inventory shrinkage and cash compliance

  • Buying & Merchandising: Report on inventory valuation, working capital exposure, margin performance, and forecast cash requirements

  • Marketing & Branding: Reconcile marketing funds, monitor compliance, analyze campaign performance, and support pricing and promotional strategies

  • Human Resources: Ensure payroll accuracy, monitor headcount costs, and support compensation and benefits planning

Team Leadership & Capability Building (Finance Excellence)

  • Build, lead, and develop a high-performing finance team

  • Establish standard operating procedures covering month-end close, reporting, controls, and audit preparation

  • Promote a culture of accuracy, integrity, and commercial partnership, coaching team members on business acumen and stakeholder engagement

Requirements

Educational Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business Administration, or another numerate discipline

  • Professional certifications required: ACA (ICAN), ACCA, or CPA

  • CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) is an added advantage

Experience

  • 8–12+ years of progressive finance leadership experience, preferably within retail or multi-site operations

  • Demonstrated expertise in retail finance (electronics, fashion, FMCG, or hospitality), high-growth environments, early-stage finance infrastructure, working capital management, and multi-store P&L oversight

  • Proven record of delivering clean audits, building finance functions, maintaining robust controls, managing liquidity, and partnering with non-finance leaders to drive performance

Knowledge

  • Nigerian GAAP/IFRS standards and best practices

  • Nigerian tax regulations and compliance requirements (CIT, VAT, WHT, PAYE)

  • Retail finance principles, including inventory accounting, shrinkage, and multi-store P&L management

  • Cash flow forecasting, working capital optimization, and internal control frameworks

  • Financial modeling, budgeting techniques, and ERP or accounting systems

Skills
