Job Summary

The Senior Accountant is responsible for managing the organization’s core accounting operations, strengthening financial controls, and providing accurate, reliable financial information to support management decision-making.
This role oversees operational accounting related to mining activities, cost monitoring, statutory compliance, and the supervision of junior accounting staff, while contributing to informed financial planning and strategic analysis.


Key Responsibilities

Financial Accounting and Reporting

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in a timely and accurate manner, in compliance with Nigerian GAAP and IFRS requirements.

  • Maintain the general ledger, ensuring all transactions are correctly recorded and supported by appropriate documentation.

  • Review accounts payable and receivable, perform reconciliations, and resolve variances without delay.

  • Produce monthly management accounts and deliver financial insights to guide operational and strategic decisions.

  • Support internal and external audit processes by providing schedules, explanations, and supporting documentation.

  • Review and validate journal entries prepared by junior accountants to ensure consistency with internal accounting policies.

Operational Accounting and Cost Management

  • Monitor and analyze operational expenses, including fuel, fleet-related costs, maintenance, and other site-specific expenditures.

  • Oversee inventory, costing, and fixed asset records, ensuring accuracy for mining equipment and operational consumables.

  • Contribute to budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis to support effective financial planning.

  • Track operational efficiency and propose cost-control and cost-saving initiatives where appropriate.

Internal Controls and Statutory Compliance

  • Establish and maintain effective internal control systems to protect company assets and financial integrity.

  • Ensure full compliance with Nigerian tax legislation, accounting standards, and corporate governance requirements.

  • Prepare and submit statutory filings, including VAT, WHT, PAYE, pension contributions, and related obligations, in line with regulatory timelines.

Team Leadership and Capacity Development

  • Supervise and mentor junior accounting staff, reinforcing accuracy, accountability, and compliance.

  • Provide guidance and training on accounting procedures, policies, and best practices.

  • Foster a culture of professionalism, integrity, and continuous improvement within the finance function.


Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline; a Master’s degree is an added advantage.

  • Professional accounting qualification such as ICAN, ACCA, CPA, or equivalent (mandatory).

  • Between five (5) and eight (8) years of relevant accounting experience, preferably within mining, logistics, fleet operations, or multi-location industrial environments.

  • Demonstrated expertise in financial reporting, reconciliations, cost control, operational accounting, and statutory compliance.

  • Proficiency in accounting systems such as Sage, QuickBooks, SAP, Oracle, or similar platforms, with advanced Microsoft Excel skills including pivot tables, dashboards, and financial models.
